Project Overview :
After moving to Europe in 2015, I was invited to remain part of Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival despite no longer being based in Australia. Instead of performing live, I created a full one-hour filmed special combining stand-up, musical comedy numbers, and pre-written sketches. The piece premiered as part of the official festival program. The show blended live performance with cinematic comedy, parody concepts, and musical elements, all curated to feel like a dynamic, hybrid comedy experience.

Recognition :
Premiering as part of the Midsumma Festival’s official program, the special allowed me to maintain a creative presence in the Australian queer arts scene while based abroad. It became a strong promotional asset, demonstrating range across stand-up, writing, directing, and filmed comedic performance.

My Contribution:

  • Conceived and produced the full one-hour special from concept to delivery.

  • Served as co-director and lead writer for all stand-up, musical segments, and the majority of sketches.

  • Directed and produced two additional sketches written by a contributing writer.

  • Edited most of the film personally using Final Cut Pro.

  • Outsourced two sequences and the official trailer to an external editor for timing reasons, then integrated all materials cohesively.

  • Developed parody trailer segments requiring tonal imitation, including colour-grading references (e.g., “The Hungry Gays” styled after The Hunger Games).

  • Delivered a final product combining live stand-up energy with cinematic sketch production and music-driven comedy.

Creative / Technical Notes:

  • Hybrid format combining stage performance and cinematic sketch production.

  • Multi-location shoots with varying lighting requirements consolidated into a unified tone.

  • Parody sequences required genre-accurate colour grading and stylistic mimicry.

  • Integration of live stand-up audio with musical comedy elements.

  • Collaboration with an additional editor while maintaining a consistent narrative and visual flow.
