Format: Advocacy Video Series (5-part campaign)
Role: Director, Producer, Editor, Audio Producer
Duration: Approx. 2–3 minutes per video
Tools Used: Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro, Canon 650D
Director: Jonathan Duffy
Production Company: Jonathan Duffy in collaboration with NICHE — The National Institute for Challenging Homophobia Education
Broadcaster / Platform: National & International Advocacy Channels, IDAHOBIT, German Media Syndication

Project Overview :
This five-part advocacy series was created for IDAHOBIT in partnership with educator and anti-homophobia activist Daniel Witthaus and his organisation NICHE, expanding on stories featured in his book Beyond Priscilla. Each video represented one letter of LGBTI, using anonymised real stories from rural and remote Australia. I recorded voice actors who matched each identity wherever possible, then collaborated with cartoonist Kenton Miller, who produced live-drawn illustrations in sync with the audio. The final reveal of each video showed the completed drawing forming the letter of that community.

Recognition :
Released weekly starting on IDAHOBIT, the series received strong national and international engagement. It attracted significant media attention, was shared widely by LGBTQ+ organisations, and was translated and syndicated by a German media outlet, extending its reach across Europe.

My Contribution:

  • Developed the concept of pairing authentic rural LGBTQIA stories with live-drawn illustration.

  • Oversaw anonymisation, script preparation, and voice-casting for five unique stories.

  • Recorded voice artists and edited all audio in Logic Pro.

  • Designed and executed a custom overhead filming setup to capture live drawing without shadows or rigs — filmed upside-down and corrected in post.

  • Managed multi-stage retiming in Final Cut Pro X to synchronise drawing speed with spoken testimonies.

  • Directed the illustrator during live-draw sessions, managing timing cues and workflow.

  • Edited, colour-corrected, titled, and mastered the full series.

  • Delivered an advocacy-focused campaign adaptable for media, education, and international outreach.

Creative / Technical Notes:

  • Custom-engineered overhead setup for live drawing allowed studio-quality capture without the cost of a professional rig.

  • Upside-down capture eliminated shadows and improved line definition.

  • Extensive retiming linked emotional beats of the stories with the drawing process.

  • Visual simplicity emphasised the authenticity of lived experience.
